KIOXIA celebrates the 35th anniversary of the invention of NAND flash memory

【Introduction】April 25, 2022, Shanghai, China – What do MP3 players of the 1990s have in common with today’s smartphones? Neither would exist without NAND flash, an innovative technology that has had its influence throughout the decades. KIOXIA, a global leader in memory solutions, recently announced that it has reached a new milestone – 2022 marks the 35th anniversary of the company’s invention of NAND flash memory.

Back in 1987, it was hard to imagine how this then-new technology would impact the world. NAND flash has ushered in a new era of technology and obsolete technologies and products that have been in use for many years – changing people’s lives in different ways. Since starting from scratch 35 years ago, the NAND flash market has grown to $70 billion. In terms of capacity, NAND flash memory has increased from 4Mb to 1.33Tb – a 333,000-fold increase. To put this exponential growth in perspective, in the 1990s, the maximum capacity flash memory could only hold 1/8 of a photo. Today, the maximum capacity of NAND has grown to a staggering 1.33Tb, capable of storing 39,000 photos.

Some of the early applications enabled by flash memory technology, including digital cameras, barcode scanners, and Electronic notepads (PDAs), have grown to unimaginable levels with the technology. In addition, many new applications have been born. Many applications would not exist at all, or would not exist in the form they are today, without the advancements brought about by this invention of Kioxia. For example, smartphones, tablets, notebooks, automotive infotainment systems, gaming devices, wearables, data centers, and more.
